While meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert
Gates on Thursday (Mar. 24) at the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, Defense
Minister Ehud Barak was also receiving updates on the continuing rocket
fire from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
Defense Minister Barak said that Israel would not accept terrorism
against its citizens and would act to prevent terrorism from raising its
head.
"Only in the last hour, we saw a rocket that came to Ashdod and
possibly another rocket north of Ashdod, a continuation of the
escalation of recent days," Defense Minister Barak said. "I repeat and
emphasize: "Israel will not accept terrorism against its citizens. We
will continue to act to prevent terrorism from raising its head in the
region again and we will act to restore quiet to the entire region."
"The IDF is Israel's guarantee on the issue of security, in the
short-term and in the long-term, and also the support for the Israeli
government's continual pursuit of reaching political agreements in the
region," Defense Minister Barak added.
Two Grad rockets fired from the Gaza Strip landed on Thursday in open
territory in the Ashdod area and the Eshkol Regional Council.
Alarms were also sounded in Yavne and Rishon Letzion but no rocket
landings were identified. A number of people from Yavne and Rishon
Letzion were treated for shock following the alarms.
Since Thursday morning, six other rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, causing no damage or injuries.
